Looking back, and knowing what I do now, I could have saved myself a world of trouble.

To say that I made my fair share of mistakes when I first began dealing with my own thyroid struggles would be an understatement.

Yet, that’s also why I’ve spent years devoting my life to helping thyroid sufferers.

I don’t want others to make the same mistakes that I did.

And I certainly don’t want you to either.

I’d rather save you from the years of frustration, confusion, and dead ends that I personally went through.

After working with so many thyroid sufferers over the years, we’ve come to realize just how many people are unknowingly making the same mistakes every single day.

And the sad truth is…

Most of them were never taught to look beyond the thyroid gland itself.

Whether you’re dealing with hypothyroidism, Hashimoto’s thyroiditis, have had a thyroidectomy, or have gone through radioactive iodine treatment…

…there’s a very good chance you’ve been given incomplete information about at least one of the ideas we’re about to talk about.

And I can almost guarantee that some of these will sound controversial at first.

That’s because most thyroid sufferers are still being taught to focus almost entirely on the thyroid gland itself while overlooking some of the other factors that can influence how the body uses thyroid hormone.

Here’s the problem…

Your thyroid doesn’t work in isolation.

And that means your symptoms are often influenced by far more than just your thyroid gland or your thyroid medication alone.

It’s one reason many people begin searching for answers after feeling like their thyroid medication is not working the way they hoped it would.

This is one of the most in-depth posts I’ve written to date.

It’s long and deservedly so because we’re covering some very big topics like thyroid testing, stress response, digestion, Hashimoto’s thyroiditis, weight loss, iodine, and the Thyroid Hormone Pathway itself.

In other words…

We’re talking about the exact areas where so many thyroid sufferers are still getting stuck today.

So my hope is that this article helps you avoid some of the biggest pitfalls keeping people trapped in the same cycle year after year.

While these thyroid mistakes are not listed in any particular order, you’ll want to read every single one because they’re all important…

…especially the last.

Let’s start with mistake number one.

Mistake 1: Believing Your Thyroid Medication Is Addressing the Real Problem

Now, don’t get me wrong. Your thyroid is definitely involved.

But is your thyroid gland really the only thing influencing your thyroid struggles?

Or is your thyroid actually the victim of much bigger underlying problems?

Talk to just about any doctor or search the definition of hypothyroidism online and you’ll usually get the same explanation.

People are often led to believe that thyroid issues are simply the result of a sluggish thyroid gland.

But there’s often much more to it than that.

When it comes to thyroid health, you can’t just look at the thyroid gland alone.

You also have to look at the broader Thyroid Hormone Pathway.

This is something most people have never even heard explained before.

And yet it changes everything.

Your thyroid struggles are often influenced not just by your thyroid gland or medication, but by how well your body activates, transports, and uses that thyroid hormone.

For example, your body still needs to:

  • Convert thyroid hormone into more active forms
  • Transport thyroid hormone where it needs to go
  • Allow thyroid hormone to properly interact with your cells
  • Efficiently use the thyroid hormone available

And here’s the crazy thing…

Many thyroid sufferers are struggling in several of these areas at the same time.

Not just one.

(Note: In our 3 Food Triple-Thyroid-Boosting Daily Protocol, I show you our simple SOBC Method for supporting your Thyroid Hormone Pathway and thyroid health.)

3 Food Triple-Thyroid-Boosting Daily Protocol

You can download this daily protocol here.

This is also one reason why some people continue struggling even while taking thyroid medication.

In fact, many thyroid sufferers are told their medication is “working” based on lab tests alone while they still struggle with fatigue, brain fog, weight changes, low motivation, and other daily symptoms.

If your body has difficulty properly using thyroid hormone, simply increasing hormone levels may not fully address the issue.

Supporting how your body uses thyroid hormone may have a bigger impact.

That’s why we focus so heavily on supporting the broader Thyroid Hormone Pathway.

Because sometimes the missing piece isn’t just the hormone itself…

…it’s how well your body is able to respond to and use it.

Mistake 2: Believing Your Thyroid Medication Is Working Because Your Labs Look “Normal”

This is one of the most frustrating experiences thyroid sufferers deal with today.

You go to the doctor. You explain your symptoms.

You talk about the fatigue… the brain fog… the cold hands and feet… the weight changes… the low motivation… the poor sleep…

And then you’re told: “Your labs look normal.”

Meanwhile, you still don’t feel normal.

Sound familiar?

This is one of the biggest reasons people begin wondering whether their thyroid medication is actually working properly in the first place.

Here’s the problem…

Thyroid testing is often far more nuanced than most people realize.

Some practitioners, and research, support a TSH range well below what is considered normal.

At the same time, many practitioners also believe thyroid symptoms should be evaluated alongside a broader picture of health rather than relying on a single marker alone.

Stress, medications, metabolic health, poor sleep, and other factors can all influence how someone feels.

In other words, thyroid medication alone may not always address every factor influencing your thyroid symptoms.

That’s why so many thyroid sufferers become frustrated when they’re told their labs look fine despite still struggling with daily symptoms.

The point isn’t to obsess over one lab number.

It’s to look at the bigger picture.

Because sometimes what everyone thinks is the answer…

…is only one small piece of the puzzle.

Mistake 3: Blaming Your Symptoms Entirely on “Adrenal Fatigue”

Adrenal fatigue is one of the most misunderstood topics in the thyroid world.

And unfortunately, many thyroid sufferers end up chasing adrenal protocols for years without ever addressing the bigger issue underneath.

Now, this doesn’t mean stress doesn’t matter.

It absolutely does.

Your adrenal glands are resilient.

But the relationship between your stress response and thyroid health is often much more interconnected than people realize.

Here’s what most people never get taught…

Your body relies heavily on healthy thyroid function to support healthy energy production.

And when your body is under chronic stress for long periods of time, it can become much harder for your body to efficiently use thyroid hormone.

This creates a vicious cycle.

The more stress your body experiences, the harder it may become for your body to maintain healthy thyroid function.

And the more your thyroid health struggles, the harder it becomes for your body to maintain healthy stress resilience and steady energy.

In other words…

Your thyroid and stress response influence each other.

That’s why supporting both your stress response and overall thyroid health together is often important.

Not one or the other.

Mistake 4: Believing Your Gut Problems Are the Root Cause of Everything

Digestive health is another area where thyroid sufferers are often given incomplete information.

Today, many people are told that their gut is the root cause of everything.

And while digestive health absolutely matters…

…thyroid function can influence your digestive health too.

This is another example of what everyone thinks versus what’s really going on beneath the surface.

Your digestive system requires a tremendous amount of energy to function properly.

And thyroid hormone plays an important role in supporting healthy metabolism and energy production throughout the body.

When thyroid function is struggling, many people begin noticing issues like:

  • Bloating
  • Sluggish digestion
  • Food sensitivities
  • Constipation
  • General digestive discomfort

Research has also explored links between low thyroid function and bacterial overgrowth in the digestive tract.

Supporting thyroid and metabolic health can often support healthy digestion and digestive comfort.

This is another reason many thyroid sufferers discover that improving overall thyroid support often involves much more than medication alone.

For many thyroid sufferers, digestive support and thyroid support often go hand in hand.

Not separately.

Mistake 5: Believing a Healthy Thyroid Diet Is Just About Avoiding “Bad” Foods

This is one of the biggest mistakes we see today.

Many thyroid sufferers reduce thyroid nutrition down to a simple list of foods to avoid.

No gluten. No dairy. No sugar. No carbohydrates.

And while certain foods absolutely can matter…

…thyroid nutrition is often far more complex than simply labeling foods as “good” or “bad.”

Food isn’t just about elimination.

It’s about balance.

Things like:

  • Protein balance
  • Carbohydrate balance
  • Fat quality
  • Meal timing
  • Micronutrient balance
  • Overall metabolic support

…can all influence how someone feels.

For example, some people notice far steadier energy when meals are balanced in a way that better supports blood sugar and metabolism throughout the day.

Others improve when they focus on consistency instead of constantly jumping between restrictive diets.

The crazy thing is…

Many thyroid sufferers are actually under-eating in an attempt to lose weight and “eat healthy.”

And over time, that can leave the body feeling even more stressed and depleted.

The point is this:

Thyroid nutrition is often more strategic than simply removing a handful of foods.

A more balanced and supportive approach is usually much more effective long term.

Especially for people who feel like their thyroid medication is no longer helping the way it once did.

Mistake 6: Failing to Understand Why Thyroid Medication Works Differently for Different People

Not all thyroid hormones behave the same way in the body.

And this is something many thyroid sufferers are never properly taught.

T4 acts more slowly and remains in the body longer.

T3 acts more quickly and is used more rapidly.

Because of this, some people notice changes in how they feel throughout the day depending on the type of thyroid support they’re using.

This is one reason why some practitioners explore different thyroid medication approaches depending on the individual.

The key takeaway here is simple…

Thyroid hormone balance and utilization can be much more individualized than many people realize.

Which again brings us back to the Thyroid Hormone Pathway.

It’s not just about having thyroid hormone available.

It’s about how well your body is actually able to use it.

Mistake 7: Believing Antibody Testing Alone Tells the Full Hashimoto’s Story

Hashimoto’s thyroiditis is commonly associated with thyroid antibody testing.

But here’s where things often become oversimplified.

Antibody testing may not always provide the complete picture when evaluating Hashimoto’s thyroiditis.

Some practitioners believe additional thyroid tissue evaluation can offer further context.

This matters because thyroid antibodies can sometimes appear in other autoimmune-related conditions as well.

The bigger takeaway here is that thyroid testing and evaluation are often much more nuanced than many people realize.

And unfortunately, many thyroid sufferers are given very little explanation beyond a single lab result.

Again…

This is why looking at the broader picture matters.

Mistake 8: Trying To Force Weight Loss Before Supporting Your Thyroid Health

Weight loss is one of the most emotional struggles many thyroid sufferers deal with.

And honestly…

We completely understand why.

When you don’t feel like yourself anymore, it’s natural to want the weight gone as quickly as possible.

That’s why so many people end up trapped in cycles of:

  • Extreme dieting
  • Over-exercising
  • Restrictive eating
  • Constant calorie cutting

The problem is that these approaches can sometimes place even more stress on the body.

Many people believe: “If I could just lose the weight, everything would get better.”

But for many thyroid sufferers, the opposite approach is often far more helpful.

Supporting metabolic and thyroid health may help support healthier weight management.

And for many thyroid sufferers, this is where they begin realizing the issue may not simply be “lack of willpower” or “getting older.”

That’s why we often encourage people to focus first on:

  • Better sleep
  • Better stress support
  • Better nourishment
  • Better energy support
  • Better metabolic health

Because when the body feels safer and more supported… everything else often becomes easier.

Mistake 9: Believing More Thyroid Support Always Means Better Results

Iodine is one of the most misunderstood nutrients in thyroid health.

Yes, iodine is important.

But more is not always better.

Excessive iodine intake may negatively affect thyroid function in some individuals.

And this is where many thyroid sufferers accidentally run into problems.

Some people assume that because iodine supports thyroid hormone production, taking very large amounts must be even better.

But thyroid health rarely works that way.

High-dose iodine supplementation may not be appropriate for everyone.

This is why balance matters so much in thyroid nutrition and supplementation.

Too little support can create problems.

But too much support in the wrong area can create problems too.

Mistake 10: Falling for Misguided Thyroid Advice That Keeps You Stuck

I saved what is possibly the most important mistake for last.

Because as you can see…

We’ve covered a lot of controversial topics throughout this article.

And for good reason.

There’s an overwhelming amount of conflicting information in the thyroid world today.

One person tells you carbohydrates are dangerous.

Another tells you they’re essential.

One person says your labs are normal.

Another says they aren’t.

One person says your gut is the problem.

Another says it’s your adrenals.

And after years of hearing completely opposite advice…

Many thyroid sufferers begin feeling hopeless.

Like nothing makes sense anymore.

Sometimes we can become our own worst enemy.

Sometimes we become so overwhelmed by conflicting advice that we stop seeing the bigger picture.

And unfortunately, many thyroid sufferers spend years repeating the same cycles over and over again.

But mistakes themselves are not the problem.

Mistakes are how we learn.

They’re how we grow.

And they’re often what brings us closer to finally understanding what’s really going on.

I know that firsthand because I made many of these same mistakes myself.

And if I hadn’t gone through those struggles…

…I wouldn’t be able to help others the way I can today.

The good news is that many thyroid sufferers don’t necessarily need more complexity.

They often just need a more complete and balanced approach.

And one of the best places to start is with the foundations:

  • Better nutrition
  • Better stress support
  • Better metabolic support
  • Better consistency
  • Better understanding of the Thyroid Hormone Pathway

Because sometimes the issue isn’t that nothing is working

it’s that something important is still missing.

One of the easiest ways to get started on the path to better thyroid health is to start with the right diet.

And in the 3 Food Triple-Thyroid-Boosting Daily Protocol, we show you exactly how you can start using your diet to better support how your body uses thyroid hormone.

This protocol is used by each and every one of our clients — and it’s so simple we wanted to share it with you too.
