Do you suffer from chronic joint pain or arthritis?

I know many of my clients do.

In fact, when I last took a survey of my readers, I was astounded that 48.5% experienced joint and/or muscle pain.

Needless to say, hypothyroidism plays a pivotal role in both.

Yet, successful treatment of joint pain requires a two-step approach.

The first step is to provide short-term relief of the pain, while supporting your thyroid.

I’ll show you five thyroid joint pain remedies I use with my clients in a second.

Yet, this is where most popular treatments go wrong. They merely hide the pain, while further hurting your thyroid health in the process.

For example…

  • Corticosteroids, Cortisone, or Prednisone block thyroid hormone (T3) and perpetuate the underlying cause of your joint pain.
  • Anti-Inflammatory drugs (NSAIDS with the exception of aspirin) impair your liver’s ability to convert thyroid hormone.
  • Bio-Identical estrogen blocks your thyroid gland from releasing thyroid hormone and activates your thyroid suppressive stress response.
  • Immune-Suppressants like Methotrexate, which only mask the pain, also affect your thyroid through its toxic effects on your liver.

If you’re already hypothyroid, then it should make sense to avoid any treatment that hurts your thyroid health.

Trading one problem (pain) for another problem (worse thyroid dysfunction) never works.

It only pushes you closer and closer to permanent degeneration of your joints.

The second step is to fix the underlying cause of your joint pain.

This second step is a little more complicated and involves re-activating your thyroid hormone pathway and rebalancing a group of hormones called glucocorticoids.

(NOTE: Re-activating your thyroid hormone pathway is essential to correcting thyroid dysfunction as covered in this post on “How We Overcome Hypothyroidism When All Else Fails”.)

Most people never make it to step two. In fact, most people don’t understand how hypothyroidism causes joint pain and arthritis.

They just want relief from the pain.

They just want to live a normal life So, here are five thyroid joint pain remedies I use with my clients that you can also use to get some much needed relief.

1. Targeted Progesterone Oil Therapy

With joint pain and arthritis, it’s like your stress response is stuck in overdrive.

Yet the production line is broken and you’re not able to produce the needed hormones.

It becomes out of control and you can’t seem to stop it.

One the most protective hormones that your body produces is progesterone.

Progesterone happens to be effective at slowing down and protecting you from an out of control stress response.

It also protects and improves your thyroid health in many ways.

Normally our goal is to get progesterone into the bloodstream where it can be delivered anywhere in your body.

However, sometimes we want to target specific parts of your body to build up larger concentrations of progesterone in those areas.

With joint pain and arthritis, targeted progesterone therapy is well warranted.

Rubbing progesterone oil directly into the affected joints not only helps to lower the inflammation, it also helps decrease the stress at the joints.

I often have clients rub 300mg to 500mg of our molecular progesterone oil into and around the affected joints daily.

Depending on the size and area of coverage needed, more may be necessary.

We also use a little coconut oil or olive oil, when needed, to help the progesterone oil spread and absorb easier.

(NOTE: To get the maximum thyroid-boosting benefits from progesterone, it’s best to also use non-targeted progesterone therapy by rubbing 50mg to 100mg of the progesterone oil into the gums of the mouth.)

2. Increase Your Thyroid Protective Hormones (with Thyroid Hormone Therapy)

Another one of the biggest contributing factors of arthritis and joint pain is the decline in your protective steroidal hormones.

I’m referring to the many hormones that protect you from your out of control stress response.

Progesterone is one, but there are also many other important ones.

In hypothyroidism, there’s typically either a deficiency in thyroid hormone (T3), or factors that block your cells from using thyroid hormone (T3) properly.

Thyroid hormone (T3) is the master hormone from which all of these thyroid protective hormones are produced.

So, without adequate thyroid hormone (T3), you simply can’t produce these needed thyroid protect hormones.

There are many ways we boost thyroid hormone (T3) levels, such as using our 3 Food Thyroid-Boosting Daily Protocol.

If you haven’t yet downloaded and put it to use, click here to get it.

Yet, one way to immediately increase thyroid hormone (T3) levels is to use a thyroid hormone supplement.

When you have adequate thyroid hormone (along with adequate vitamin A and cholesterol), this helps to boost your thyroid protective hormone levels… and relieve your joint pain.

I’ve had clients who have experienced very quick and immediate remission of joint and arthritic pain with the proper use thyroid hormone (T3) alone.

It’s not uncommon at all. Yet, alone it doesn’t always work for everyone.

For those who don’t respond, we sometimes have to help push this process along with some light-therapy.

3. Boost Your Thyroid Protect Hormones with Light-Therapy

Your thyroid protective hormones are produced by many organs and in many different parts of your body.

Some we have little to no control over.

Yet, some are more easily influenced. One part of your body that produces a lot of thyroid protective hormones, which we can influence rather easily, is your skin.

As Dr. Raymond Peat points out…

“light on the skin directly increases the skin’s production of steroids, without depending on other organs. Different steroids probably involve different frequencies of light, but orange and red light seem to be important frequencies.”

What Dr. Peat is referring to here is light-therapy.

By using the right kind of light, we can activate an important enzyme in the skin called cytochrome c oxidase.

This enzyme plays an essential role in the production of your thyroid protective hormones.

This is one reason why getting adequate sunlight is essential to good thyroid health.

Today we tend to lack sunlight as many spend most of their days indoors, or live in areas where sunlight is limited during winter months.

So, to fix this, I have my clients use a simple homemade light-therapy device which can be used indoors at any time of the day.

It’s especially helpful during winter months.

You can find the instructions on how to make this light-therapy lamp in this post on “How to Build Your Own Thyroid-Boosting Light Therapy Lamp”.

4. Niacinamide Therapy for Arthritis

Niacinamide, also known as vitamin B3, has been used successfully for the treatment of arthritis for over 50 years.

Yet, you’ve likely not heard of it since the medical establishment promotes drug use and has no interest in promoting vitamin-based therapies.

As far back as the 1940’s and 1950’s, Dr. William Kaufman and Dr. Abram Hoffer presented research and case studies demonstrating the many joint protective benefits of niacinamide for arthritis including…

  • Decreased joint pain
  • Increased joint mobility
  • Decreased joint stiffness
  • Decreased joint swelling
  • And even decreased joint deformity

Since then, the number of proven benefits of niacinamide has grown significantly, including for thyroid health.

For example, one reason we use niacinamide with clients is to help improve their ability to use thyroid hormone (T3), allowing the thyroid hormone to work more efficiently.

It also plays an integral role in supporting healthy oxidative metabolism, which is also essential to good thyroid health.

For the treatment of arthritis, large doses have shown to be most effective.

Best results are often seen with a dosage of 3g to 4g daily, which is best split into multiple smaller doses taken throughout the day.

5. Increase Your Anti-Inflammatory Proteins

Too much of the wrong types of protein can block the enzymes your thyroid gland needs to produce thyroid hormone.

So, to give your thyroid a fighting chance, we also need to focus on getting more thyroid-supportive protein from sources like collagen.

Collagen is especially rich in the amino acid “glycine”, which has a number of anti-inflammatory effects.

In fact, studies show collagen to be quite effective in relieving joint pain…

Effect of collagen hydrolysate in articular pain: a 6-month randomized, double-blind, placebo controlled study. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/22500661CONCLUSIONS: This study suggests that collagen hydrolysate 1200 mg/day could increase the number of clinical responders (i.e. improvement of at least 20% on the VAS) compared to placebo.”

Today, research shows that most people are deficient in collagen, which is a major problem for your thyroid health.

(NOTE: You can learn about the many ways that collagen helps support your thyroid health in this post on “5 Ways to Boost Your Thyroid with 35 Grams of Collagen per Day”.)

I recommend and use collagen hydrolysate protein powder with all of my clients.

In cases of arthritis, it’s important to get at least 35 grams of collagen protein daily.

For best results it should be used predominantly in the morning and at night.

So, there you have it…

You now have five thyroid joint pain remedies at your disposal.

They are proven and they can be very effective when used properly.

Yet, don’t forget there’s still a step two…

Correcting the underlying hormonal dysfunction is still necessary for permanent results.

But getting relief from the pain is often more important in the beginning, so you CAN focus on your thyroid health…

… and get back to the more important things in life.
